Press Release Body = A jury in Elkton, Maryland decided that Charles W. Azain, 56 years old, a jilted lover is responsible to pay the outstanding amount of $52,000 to his former girlfriend for damages due to his derogatory writings. Azain was jilted by Bonnie Gifford, 52 years old and afterwards wrote a whole book containing lies regarding Gifford. The book was then distributed to Gifford\'s family, co-workers and students.
Los Angeles, California, July 13, 2007 - Azain claimed that he was in a miserable state after he broke up with Gifford in 2004. To channel his desperate mood, he had written the manuscript entitled \"The Bonnie Chronicles\" which contain 54 pages of made-up stories and false claims about his former girlfriend. Some of the false claims contained in the manuscript were the statements declaring that Gifford had bipolar disorder and HIV or AIDS.
Gifford\'s lawyer, Edward Andre Richitelli said that Azain also sent copies of \"The Bonnie Chronicles\" manuscript to the Rising Sun Middle School where Gifford was teaching sixth graders. He also sent them to the administrative office of the Cecil County Public Schools and to Gifford\'s mother and adult children.
Richitelli produced results of medical tests that shows that Gifford and Azain were both not positive for HIV. However, the bipolar disorder claim was not supported with medical examinations.
In defense of his actions, Azain claimed to jurors that he may have suffered from temporary insanity. However, it took only 30 minutes for the panel of jurors to decide that Azain was liable for the civil case for defamation of character.
The jury decided upon awarding $50,000 in punitive damages to be paid by Azain to Gifford and additional of $2,000 as compensatory damages.
